If you are one of Colorado’s growing businesses, you are likely not only working to fill your sales funnel but also need employment solutions that will keep a steady flow of job candidates coming in your door. Old ways of hiring are no longer working and employers are looking at staffing agencies to fill employment gaps. As the need for skilled talent grows, and the job candidate pool shifts from millennials entering the workforce and baby boomers leaving, you’ll want to have employment solutions in place to support your growth and make sure you’re attracting the right candidates.
Today’s employment solutions also will require a few new tactics for obtaining quality staff. Hiring managers may find themselves overwhelmed with this new paradigm, but quality employment agencies stay on top of trends to attract the quality candidates for their clients to pull from.
First Strategy: Examine your Salary and Benefits Packages
Look at local and national trends for the positions you are hiring to determine if you are competitive. If not, what changes need to be made to make the salary and benefits more attractive to the type of staff you desire? The answer may surprise you. Do you know what your candidates want?
Employees known as “generation X,” those workers born between 1964 and 1977, are looking for intellectual stimulation, flexibility in time management and positive work environments.
Those who identify at millennials, workers born between 1981 and 1997, want work-life balance, mentoring and global opportunities.
Finally, baby boomers still in the work force are looking for reduced hours and flexibility.
With these generalizations in mind, you may change your tactics in recruiting talent in your employment solutions. Don’t rely on old-fashioned salary and benefits packages when less expensive (potentially) and more unique opportunities may create more retention, loyalty and attraction.
Second Strategy: Sell yourself
We have more access to knowledge than ever before, thanks to the internet. This means job seekers can see what their skills are worth in the job force, as well as employment trends. The top candidates- especially those with high quality soft skills- know what they can get for what they have to offer.
Be prepared to offer why your organization can benefit from the job seeker’s experiences. Ask questions in the process to determine the individual’s passions, needs and desires, and be willing to create methods to meet those in a mutually beneficial way.
Selling yourself doesn’t mean jumping through hoops to satisfy picky job seekers, but rather having employment solutions that understand how the job pool is changing. The culture should be flexible enough to allow people to achieve what they are looking for in order to choose you, and to stay. This is true human capital management at its finest and it produces increased productivity, loyalty and job satisfaction.
Third Strategy: Prioritize Retention
Retention is nearly a lost art among employers. Boomers had tons of employer loyalty and Xer’s didn’t care as much. Exit interviews as well as current employee engagement and surveys can help you determine the main reasons for employee turn-over.
Remember there is no 100 percent retention rate — people retire, move, and have home situations that change their employment. These are all parts of life. If, however, you noticed a trend that employees in a particular department are always the ones to turn-over and in surveys you discovered it was simply because they needed more breaks from physical labor, would that be easy enough to resolve? What if you discovered they were leaving for companies that paid similar but offered a wellness program? Could that change how you conducted business?
Employment solutions need to fit the company’s culture, the type of position and the types of people they seek to attract. Staffing agencies understand this and can support you through employment solutions focused on all these components.
